Post subject:  Arc Flash validity

If an arc flash is performed, how many years it's valid for. I heard 5 years is mentioned in NFPA 70E?

It is from NFPA 70E 130.5(G) Incident Energy Analysis Method.

The incident energy analysis shall be updated when changes occur in the electrical distribution system that could affect the results of the analysis. The incident energy analysis shall also be reviewed for accuracy at intervals not to exceed 5 years.

Note that NFPA 70E states that the study must be "Reviewed" and does not mention anything about being "Valid". In other words, the study may not be needed to be re-performed if there have not been any major changes to the distribution system or electrical equipment.

However, the IEEE 1584 Standard has been revised and now requires additional data to calculate the arc flash energy. If your study was performed before September 27th, 2018, then it will need to be re-performed using the new IEEE-2018 Standard.
