Post subject:  Are Safety Symbols Required

Is a safety symbol such as a lightning bolt or flash in a triangle required on all arc flash labels?

If so, are there any requirements for what the symbol should be or the size of the symbol?

Article 130.3(C) of the NFPA-70E requires the label to contain the available incident energy or the required level of PPE but other than that, it does not describe how the label should look. Article 110.16 FPN No. 2 of the NEC references you to ANSI Z 535 for design guidlines; this is the American National Standard for Product Safety Signs and Labels.

Arc Flash Label Examples

Perhaps this might help some... The first attachment is directly from the '09 70E handbook and the second is a page copied from a Brady catalog.

I personally use the labels generated by the EasyPower software and print them using the Brady Tagus T300. My labels also show the shock hazard and approach boundaries.

Arc Flash Lable Example

Here is another example of an AF Label. This label meets both NFPA 70E and ANSI Z 535 standards.

http://www.powerstudies.com/services_arcflash.htm

Note the triangle with the ! in it and that top banner states Warning on the Orange back ground. For areas where the AF energy is above 40 Cal/cm2, the top banner should be RED and the description states "DANGER"
